We recently had a guest at our house. One night she asked me what I was most looking forward to about our cross country road trip. Without hesitation I said, "Time alone in the car with Jack." Of course, I quickly added, "Visiting churches, talking with ministers about making passionately devoted followers of Chirst, discovering what God wants to teach us through this project, and seeing sights I've never seen in our incredibly expansive country." Then I said again, "But what I'm really looking forward to is time with Jack."
She said, "I asked Jack the same question, and that's exactly what he said."
After thirty-two years of marriage, he still lights up the room for me when he walks in. In the busyness of life, work, and ministry, often our nightly conversations are to exchange information and divvy up responsibilities. So to have uninterrupted time to talk, listen together to music, books on CD, or sermons, and enjoy new experiences together is what I am most anticipating about this road trip. The fact that we can slip easily from talking about our varied interests to talking about spiritual matters has always been one of the most satisfying aspects of our relationship. I feel really blessed to be embarking on a six thousand mile road trip with the funniest, most stimulating, fascinating man I know.
